Phuket is the largest island in Thailand at approximately 550 sq km and lies in the Andaman sea. Phuket has its' own international airport and there are many daily flights from Bangkok to Phuket. Bus journeys from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) can take 14 hours but they are very cheap. There are no direct trains to Phuket from Bangkok but trains do go from Bangkok to Surat Thani where a bus can be taken to reach Phuket.

Phuket has a huge variety of accommodation available along its many famous beaches. Prices are quite high relative to other islands in Thailand. The busiest and most popular beach area is at Patong Beach which boasts a very lively, if slightly

infamous, nightlife scene. Patong is very westernised with many western shops, restaurants and bars dominating the area.

Other beaches on Phuket are more laid back and quieter than Patong. Karon beach lies below Patong but this long stretch of sand is much quieter while still offering a full range of restaurants, bars, accommodation and nightlife but on smaller scale.
